If you are thinking of getting something to just backup files from your computer, you may just want to get either 1. A secondary hard drive and install it on your existing machine, and then back everything up on that. Or you could you get an external HD and connect it whenever you want to do a backup.
This would be a cheaper way to go IMO instead of throwing down the bux for a new box. If you want to do the new computer, I suppose the OS that you would be looking for would be dependent on the functions that you want to use the server for. Again, if it's just for basic file backup only, I would think that you could just throw any OS on there and then network it to the rest of your computers. If you are looking for a server that does more "server like" functions like running applications directly from the server, I would go with something like Win 2k3 is the most stable "server" OS out there. _________________ F8|Whitman / FATE.Whitman

i've seen some wicked 1 terabyte external network storage drives for home use for around a hundred bucks or so. way cheaper than another computer.
if you DO have an extra comp to use for this - try running ubuntu linux on it for a server. it's free and works pretty much like windows. |

If you are just talking about backing up, no need for a home server. As far as the equipment, if you had an extra machine around your house you could repurpose it with a server OS.
Talking backups, I would almost recommend you use Acronis True Image and an external HD. Acronis takes a snapshot of yyour harddrive and if you have any problems that image can be reinstalled and running in five minutes with no other installation of software.
I personally would not use a server in my home environment unless I was going to create a locked down network, I would put the server before my router on my network and I would set up the "Users" (Ones other than me that will also require access to the network). Thsi way I could have a secure network for my whole home and not worry about my PC's behind my server.
As far as Whitmans comments about Server2K3, I do not agree. I have working server 2k3 and 2k8. I have seen no instability in either server. Server 2k8 is about 1000 times easier to configure than 2k3. However, for home use I would definatly look at a Linux solution as you could probably find a free Server OS. Unless you are a tech student, you will be paying thousands for a copy of Windows Server, and will still need to purchase an Anti-Virus program for server which is also a costly expense.
Edit: I forgot to mention the Virtualization that can be done in the 2k8 environment as well |

WOW
Thanks everyone for the great info.
I guess what I would like to do is just backup my pc's just incase one should get a bug. So if I'am understanding this correctly all I really need is an external drive and some kind of software to run it. I do have a program called memeo (never tried it) and Acronis True image 10 not sure if either one them will work.
So first things first I'll buy a big ass external harddrive
again THANKS for all the info |

What you are wanting to do is what your Acronis true Image is intended for |
