|
|
Short story:
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate the other day, but before I installed, I wanted to increase the memory in my machine. Did not spend too much time shoping and purchased G.Skill f2-6400cl5d ram. However, the order got screwed up and now I have 2 of these = 8G. What is a guy suppose to do now??? Answer - Go get a faster cpu to keep up. Therefore, i purchased an E8500 (again did not spend too much time shopping) to replace E6600. Must have done something right b/c wife was not happy .
Question: Before I install all this I would like to benchmark the machine before and after to get a sense of the improvement. Anyone have any suggestions? 3DMark05-Free?
Thanks,

Just did the same thing KS........Went from a E6700 to E8600 but I only have 4 meg of ram. I ran 3DMark 03 and 06 and saw a marked improvement (But thats on Win XP Pro 32bit OS). Just finished loading Win 7 Pro 64bit last night, now at some point I will benchmark the system and see if I gained anymore performance with the 64bit OS which will utilize all the memory.
Let us know how you make out. I'll post my scores from XP 32bit OS.........If I can find them, along with the new resuts. |

| Futuremark puts out a few common ones listed like everywhere for reviews. Another is SISofts' Sandra benchmark suite. I think it's free to try too. |

Sorry this took me so long to post. I was holding off b/c I have not been able to make any changes to the default setting to achieve any kind of OC. Not really sure why, but i would guess at 2 sources. 1. MB does not support win7. 2. MB is not happy w/ e8500. I state #2 b/c as soon as I dropped it in, I could not get the OS to load until I went back to default when I did a new install of win7. I did not intent on installing 7 at this time, I really wanted to make sure all new hardware was working properly first, but since i could not get anything to load, what the hell.
OK, so far my #'s. Fairly modest increases since I can't OC

Interesting that your FPS dropped migrating OSes. I guess that's a driver thing. Did you use the same version of Nvidia forceware drivers?
Synthetic benchmarks don't tell the whole story though, sadly. |

Try removing 4gb of RAM. Could be an issue with the board and the total amount of ram (even though it should work)
Not sure why you have problems with Win 7 and games? The only issue I get is on occasion PB cannot connect and I get kicked. Usually a reboot remedies this problem. |

OK, in the end I had to get a new MB that supports the 45nm CPU's. System and lag appears to be stable now.
Gigabyte GA EP45-UD3P
E8500 oc'ed @ 4.0Ghz
8G of 800 Ram
8800 GTS
Win 7 Ult x64
3DMark Score 19727 3DMarks
CPU Score 20554 CPUMarks
FurMark did not change much. Min went to 18fps and the others did not change.

@darkest, Yes. thanks for your help and talking me through it.
I installed the new MB w/o re-installing the OS. Just deleted the mb drivers and dropped everything in. worked great. so far nothing has freeked out.
Really like Gigabyte's simple OC'ing program. A push of one button and the machine was running @ 4.0ghz. Too easy.
